Let us examine the passage that Paul quotes in Romans 3:10ff, Psalm 53:1-3: The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Historically, Protestant denominations like Presbyterian, Baptist, Lutheran, Methodist, Assemblies of God, and many others argue that baptism is necessary for obedience but not necessary for salvation. Answer: Since no statement to this effect can be found in Acts 10 or any other passage, to understand and respond to this argument, we must understand the underlying assumption driving it: if one has the Holy Spirit, one must be in a saved state. If you make baptism a requirement for salvation, you also require a baptizer, adding someone to the salvation that comes through Christ alone. Others believe that baptism, while not accomplishing salvation, is still a sign and seal of salvation. Sponsors or godparents are at the baptism. We are to preach the rule, not dwell on some ludicrous exceptions. Jesus Christ submitted to baptism as an example for believers to follow.
